Ebook About
'Nick Bryant is brilliant. He has a way of showing you what you've been missing from the whole story whilst never leaving you feeling stupid.' Emily Maitlis'Bryant is a genuine rarity, a Brit who understands America' – Washington PostIn When America Stopped Being Great, veteran reporter and BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant reveals how America's decline paved the way for Donald Trump's rise, sowing division and leaving the country vulnerable to its greatest challenge of the modern era.Deftly sifting through almost four decades of American history, from post-Cold War optimism, through the scandal-wracked nineties and into the new millennium, Bryant unpacks the mistakes of past administrations, from Ronald Reagan's 'celebrity presidency' to Barack Obama's failure to adequately address income and racial inequality. He explains how the historical clues, unseen by many (including the media) paved the way for an outsider to take power and a country to slide towards disaster. As Bryant writes, 'rather than being an aberration, Trump's presidency marked the culmination of so much of what had been going wrong in the United States for decades – economically, racially, politically, culturally, technologically and constitutionally.'A personal elegy for an America lost, unafraid to criticise actors on both sides of the political divide, When America Stopped Being Great takes the long view, combining engaging storytelling with recent history to show how the country moved from the optimism of Reagan's 'Morning in America' to the darkness of Trump's 'American Carnage'. It concludes with some of the most dramatic events in recent memory, in an America torn apart by a bitterly polarised election, racial division, the national catastrophe of the coronavirus and the threat to US democracy evidenced by the storming of Capitol Hill.

Book When America Stopped Being Great: A History of the Present Review :

I was very excited to order and read this book. The topic could not be more timely, and a reporter's perspective like Mr. Bryant's is indeed a most valuable and informative one. The book, however, clearly did not undergo a very rigorous editorial review. My fascination with his topic and eagerness to read the book is undercut by the mistakes in dates and other, while relatively minor I suppose, other mistakes that detract from the overall quality of his work.Mr. Bryant, for example, writes that Timothy McVeigh's bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City occurred on April 16, 1995. It occurred on April 19, 1995.Mr. Bryant writes that the perpetrators of the first World Trade Center bombing in February 1993 exploded their device in the parking garage of the North Tower. They exploded the bomb in the parking garage of the South Tower.Mr. Bryant writes that John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon saw combat in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II. They did not. Both served only in the Pacific. These sorts of errors are a real distraction. I am surprised that Mr. Bryant, the holder of an advance degree in American History from Oxford, made these mistakes in the first place. I am further surprised that his editors evidently don't know enough American history to have caught them.A well-conceived book on a most important and timely topic, but a college sophomore's editing technique.
This book is a lament for an America that once was and a meditation on what it has become. It it is an examination of a failed generation in politics - the baby boomers from Clinton onward. It is this mediocre generation that squandered Cold War victory, increased economic inequality and overreacted to the trauma of 9/11. In a real sense, it is possible to view America losing its sense of gravitas from 2001, a throwing off balance accompanied by an existential anguish still not overcome and a failure of common sense compromise in domestic politics. If I have a criticism of this book it is that much of what the author describes as American is also, alas English-speaking Western - in this sense like Ruth in the good book where America goes so too does the West. This is sobering and sad. Globalisation, the self-satisfied Davos Man, the distancing of elites from the general public, the insularity of the media, the corruption of scholarship and reason in Western universities, the passing of patriotism and civic duty - in a phrase the end of the Enlightenment era as personified by Western science and philosophical supremacy - all are passing away in the new century. Trump is merely our Catiline in age without a Cicero. If the author's prognosis is correct, the next stage in American evolution will be less reinvention and recovery (an American art form) than a divisiveness that creates Caesarism beyond Trump's time. This is a melancholy but essential book to understand the fraying of America (and by extension, West) of our time. Spengler reaffirmed.
